Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy For Fibromyalgia
At Suffolk Oxygen Therapy Centre, we understand how exhausting life with fibromyalgia can be. The chronic pain, fatigue, and cognitive difficulties (“fibro fog”) that come with the condition can make everyday tasks feel like uphill battles — and finding consistent relief isn’t always easy.
That’s why many people living with fibromyalgia are exploring hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) as part of their wider self-care and wellness approach. While not a cure or a medical treatment, oxygen therapy can offer a gentle but powerful boost — a chance to pause, reset, and potentially feel a little more in control.
How It Helps
Oxygen therapy involves breathing pure oxygen (98%) in a pressurised environment. Breathing a higher dose of oxygen always increases the number of oxygen molecules to damaged tissues, helping to improve healing. For some individuals with fibromyalgia, this can help improve circulation, reduce feelings of fatigue and support the body’s natural recovery processes. The extra oxygen may also help soothe tension, clear the mind, and bring a sense of calm — particularly during flare-ups or difficult days.
Here’s how oxygen therapy may support fibromyalgia sufferers:
- Increases oxygen delivery to tissues
- Helps to reduce feelings of tiredness and fatigue
- Acts as a natural anti-inflammatory, helping to reduce inflammation.
- Supports relaxation and eases anxiety
- Enhances general well-being and clarity
Many of our members report that oxygen sessions help them feel less foggy or less drained after even minor exertion. It’s not universal, and it certainly isn’t a fix-all, but it can offer a bit of breathing room — quite literally. For others, it’s about reassurance: having access to oxygen can reduce the anxiety that often comes with the sensation of air hunger or breathlessness.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), which involves sitting in a pressurised chamber while breathing pure oxygen, has also gained attention. It’s important to say, though, that the science is still catching up. There’s hope, yes — but also a need for more research. HBOT isn’t widely available for Long Covid but it’s certainly worth exploring it’s physical benefits and also the peace of mind it can give to those recovering from Long Covid.

Many of our members with chronic medical conditions describe feeling less drained, more relaxed and more energised after oxygen sessions. Of course, everyone is different, and this isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution — but for some, it brings noticeable moments of pain relief. For others, it’s about reassurance: knowing that they have access to something calming when symptoms flare can ease anxiety and offer peace of mind.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), where you sit in a comfortable chamber breathing pure oxygen under controlled pressure, has been the focus of increasing interest & research. While more research is still needed to fully understand its role in managing fibromyalgia, early feedback suggests that HBOT may be worth exploring.
What’s most important is remembering that fibromyalgia affects everyone differently. What works well for one person might not work for another. That’s why HBOT is best viewed as part of a holistic approach — alongside rest, pacing, emotional support, and any other medical guidance you follow.
